Dorothy's Story
Like many Calhoun County residents, Dorothy Height is concerned about her health. By definition, she is a ‘health seeker’ or someone who seeks out ways to improve her wellness and longevity. One way she takes care of herself is by coming to the Battle Creek Family YMCA on a regular basis.
A scholarship recipient at the Battle Creek Family YMCA, Height is dedicated in her attendance. In fact, she tries not to miss a day at the Y!
“The YMCA has been my lifeline,” says Height, who suffers from lupus, heart problems, chronic fatigue and other ailments. “When the Y staff doesn’t see me here, they call to check on me. If it was not for the YMCA, I could not exist.”
Dorothy participates in a number of fitness activities at the Battle Creek Family YMCA, including yoga, Pilates and Zoomba. She says all are vital to her health and well-being. Exercise has lowered her blood pressure and stabilized her heart rate. In short, it makes her feel better, and that’s what is most important to Dorothy.
“What works for me is exercise,” she explained. “My doctor recommended that I exercise and it really makes a difference in how I feel. The YMCA is part of my life and I won’t let anybody or anything get in the way of me coming to the YMCA.”
